Our Solar System

Objective:

Students will:

- identify and name planets of Solar system;

- be able to make a model of Solar system and give a presentation;

- be able to work with such materials as paper, scissors, pencils, glue, modeling glay;

- describe planets using the vocabulary they already know.

Procedure

1. Greeting

2. Rhyme «Eight Planet»

Eight planets around the sun.

Listen as I call each one:

Mercury? Here! Number one,

The closest planet to the sun.

Venus? Here! Number two,

Shining bright, just like new.

Earth? Here! Number three,

Earth is home to you and me.

Mars? Here! Number four.

Red and ready to explore!

Jupiter? Here! Number five,

The largest planet, that’s no jive.

Saturn? Here! Number six,

With rings of dust and ice that mix.

Uranus? Here! Number seven,

A planet tilted high in heaven.

Neptune? Here! Number eight,

With one dark spot whose size is great.

3. Word Search «I know everything about Solar System»

Ask students to search the words and then make as many sentences with them as they can.

4. Making a model of Solar System

Prepare three workshops or centers where students will work with different material to make a model of Solar System. Tell students they are going to make the planets out of computer printouts, paper drawings, and polystyrene balls or modeling clay. Ask students to choose the place where they want to work.

Instructions:

- Paint the inside and outside of the shoe box with black paint and leave to dry.

- Paint the polystyrene balls with different coloured paints, i.e. orange and yellow for the sun, green and blue for the earth, red for Mars etc.

- To make Saturn’s ring find an object with the same diameter as the ball representing Saturn and draw around it on gold paper. Draw a second ring around the first, and then cut out. Place the gold ring over the ball.

- Make a small hole through the center of each «planet» with a large needle.

- Make some holes in the top of the painted shoe box and hang the «planets» through.

5. Solar System Presentation

Display students’ artwork around the class and ask each group to present their model.

6. Hometask

Ask students to create crosswords on the theme.
